A Day on the Beach

A Day on the Beach project focuses on the heritage of North Tyneside’s seaside locations during 1940's and 1950's and celebrates the memories of those who spent their time on North Tyneside’s beaches. The project was ran by VODA's Volunteer Centre in partnership with Remembering the Past, Resourcing the Future (RPRF).

The intergenerational project was led a steering group of young volunteers. Older people offered their unique and invaluable memories whilst the young people captured these memories by translating them into new media, therefore preserving the rich heritage of the coast for others to experience.

Animations

The project has producecd three animated films depicting a typical day on the beach based on memories collected from older people. Groups of younger people then worked with a professional animator to produce the films.

Photography Exhibition

The young people have used photographs of North Tyneside’s seaside locations and cherished family shots taken during the 40's and 50’s to create a photography exhibition celebrating older people’s favourite beach memories. The group also used these images as a backdrop for a vintage photo shoot and edited the images to give them a modern edge.

Report

An evaluation report has been produced documenting the progress and results of the project. Download the report here.

"“I enjoyed the experience; it has been fun and friendly. It has improved my confidence in art and design which is something that I like doing and I learned more about local history. I would recommend volunteering to others as it is fun, educational and I met new friends.” – Connor Heggie
