Volunteers explore marine life at St Mary's Lighthouse

The variety of marine life to be found around the shores of St Mary's Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, was under scrutiny by a team of volunteers recently.

The rocky shore surveying taster session took place as part of VODA's STEM Innovation project, which provides volunteering opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics roles to those interested in exploring a career in STEM fields. The group of 14 volunteers and team members spent the afernoon learning about the different techniques used to capture vital ecological data and enjoyed a hands-on session led by lighthouse staff.
